Yoemen run past Cougars

The Cameron Yoemen ran past the Jarrell Cougars on Friday night 55-0 thanks to the outstanding performances of senior running backs Nico Vargas and James DeBose.

The pair combined for 317 yards rushing and six touchdowns to lead the Yoemen to the win on a wet, cold night in Jarrell.

The win moves the Yoemen to 1-1 in district play and 5-1 on the season.

Vargas would start the game of with a 13-yard run for a touchdown with 9:23 in the first quarter. Axel Martinez would add the extra point.

DeBose would add another score on a 49-yard run and Thomas Melton would add a touchdown with a 53-yard pass from Braden Brashear to end the first quarter 21-0. Martinez would add the extra points.

Yoe dominance continued in the second quarter when DeBose would score two more times on a six-yard pass from Brashear and a 41-yard run. Martinez would add the extra points.

Vargas scored on a 12-yard run to start the third quarter and wide receiver Billy Collier added another score on a three-yard pass from Brashear, but Martinez’s kick would fail. The score was 48-0 at the end of the third quarter.

DeBose would score once again on a 90-yard run in the fourth quarter. Simbad Milan’s kick would be good to put the Yoemen up 55-0 to end the game.

Vargas had 130 yards rushing and two touchdowns and DeBose had 240 yards from scrimmage and four touchdowns on the night.

Coach Tommy Brashear noted the work of Vargas and DeBose and said that the offensive line was outstanding on the night. On the defense Eduardo Gil had nine tackles with five for a loss, a sack, a fumble recovery and a blocked field goal for an outstanding night.

The Yoemen will host Academy on Friday night at Yoe Field at 7:30 p.m. and will cross the river to take on the Rockdale Tigers on Oct. 25 for the annual Battle of the Bell.
