Yoemen top Groesbeck, Reid gets 100th win as head coach
Over the weekend, the Yoemen basketball team participated in an in-season tournament hosted by Navasota. They started off with a game on Thursday against the La Grange Leopards, and the Yoemen won in a nail biter 54-52 due to a buzzer beater by Pharrell Hemphill.
On Friday they played two games. The first game was against the Bellville Brahmas, and Cameron defeated them handily 77-49. This win was also a landmark for Coach Chris Reid as that was his 100th career win as a head coach.
The second game they played Friday was against the host Navasota Rattlers, and were defeated in a close battle 90-86. The Yoemen played one more game on Saturday against the Madisonville Mustangs. Cameron came up short, falling to the Mustangs 73-65. With that loss, Cameron came out of the tournament with a record of 2-2.
The Yoemen defeated the Groesbeck Goats at home 75-47 on Tuesday night in a game where they never trailed the entire game.
Cameron started hot with a three-pointer by Nolan Brashear (2) for a 7-0 start in the game and, and the lead grew to 12-0. The Yoemen kept up the offense with a layup by Cody Webb (30) for a 14-2 lead. That offense was backed up with great defense, like a steal and a fast break layup by Trayjen Wilcox (13) to end first quarter 18-4.
Cameron continued to dominate with a layup by Phaibian Bynaum (5) then put back layup by Charlie Mayer (22) for a more than commanding 28-4 lead, and it continued to grow to 32-6. The Yoemen went into halftime with a powerful 39-10 lead.
In the third quarter the lead for Cameron extended to 46-14. The Yoemen kept up the onslaught with a layup by Kason Goolsby (1) for a 50-14 lead. That was followed by two consecutive three-pointers by Braylan Drake (15) for whopping 59-17 lead. Third quarter ended with the score being 66-26. In the fourth quarter, the Yoemen gained a 71-31 lead and went on to win in dominating fashion 75-47.
