Yoemen top McGregor, fall to Rockdale
The Cameron Yoemen baseball team got a big win and a loss in district play over the last week.
They hosted the McGregor Bulldogs on Friday, April 19. Cameron was victorious over McGregor, winning 11-3.
The Yoemen scored first in the top of the first inning with one run. Kason Goolsby led off with a walk then went on a base running spree. He stole second base, advanced to third base on a wild pitch, then scored on a steal of home plate. McGregor answered back in the bottom of the first inning with two runs to take a 2-1 lead, both runs coming on a double.
Cameron responded back in a big way with eight runs in the third inning to lead 9-2 then held strong to win 11-3. Kallin Koehl, Homero Najera, Kason Goolsby, Xavier Gilmon, and Brody Aguirre all contributed to the third inning with big at bats. Kason Goolsby and Yovanni Cerros were a force together in the lineup, as they each collected two hits to lead the team. Goolsby and Homero Najera each drove in two runs for the Yoemen. Cameron had a strong eye at the plate, amassing six walks on the day. The Yoemen also ran wild on the base paths, stealing 15 total bases for the game.
Kallin Koehl earned the win for Cameron. The lefty allowed three hits and three runs (two earned) over seven innings, striking out nine and walking two.
The Yoemen returned home to host the Rockdale Tigers on Tuesday, April 23, for senior night. Cameron came up short against the Tigers, losing 5-4.
Cameron got on the scoreboard early with three runs in the first inning for a 3-0 lead. Brody Aguirre singled on a ground ball to left field to bring in the first run, that was followed right up with a ground ball single to left field from Braylan Drake. Aguirre would come home from second base to score on a wild pitch followed with a fielding error on a hit by Homero Najera. Rockdale answered in the third inning with a run on an RBI triple to make the score 3-1. The Tigers continued the rally with a run in the fifth inning and two runs in the sixth inning to take a 4-3 lead.
The Yoemen tied the game at 4 in the bottom of the sixth inning. Kallin Koehl led off with a single on a ground ball to center field then would later come around to score on an RBI single by Homero Najera. Unfortunately, Cameron gave up a run in the top of the seventh inning and was unable to answer back for the 5-4 defeat. The Yoemen collected nine hits in the game. Braylan Drake, Homero Najera, and Brody Aguirre each drove in one run for Cameron.
Yvanni Cerros stepped on the mound first for Cameron. He surrendered four hits and two runs over four and two-thirds innings, striking out three and walking four. Braylan Drake took the loss for Cameron. The reliever went two and one-third innings, surrendering three runs on two hits, striking out one and walking two.
This loss gives Cameron an overall record of 14-13 and a district record of 5-8.
Up next, the Yoemen will travel for a rematch with the Tigers for the regular season finale. The game will be Friday, April 26, and is set for 7 p.m.
