Yoemen win West Tournament, top Rosebud-Lott

The Yoemen  basketball team hosted the Rosebud-Lott Cougars and won 88-72 on Tuesday night at Yoe Gym. 

The first quarter started off pretty even but the Yoemen started to gain a sizeable lead from a layup by Trayjen Wilcox (13) to make the score 15-7. The Yoemen then got a three-point buzzer beater from Braylan Drake (15) for a 20-12 lead to end the first quarter. 

Cameron started the second quarter strong with a three pointer by J.W. Hollas (3) for a 25-15 lead. The Cougars clawed back to make it a 28-23 game, but Cameron went back on a scoring run with a layup by Colby Wilson (32) off of an offensive rebound to extend the lead to 34-26. The Yoemen finished the second quarter with a three-pointer by Hollas for a 37-29 lead with three seconds left and send the game into halftime. 

The Yoemen continued to dominate with a three pointer by Phaibian Bynaum (5) followed with a layup by Pharrell Hemphill (4) for a 48-40 lead and eventually grew their lead to 55-44. Cameron kept on with the onslaught with a layup by Nolan Brashear (2) off the assist by Hemphill for a dominating 65-48 lead, which would also be the score at the end of the third quarter.

Cameron completed an alley-oop from Hollas to Hemphill for a 72-51 lead and later a dunk by Hemphill to make the lead a whopping 74-56. The lead soon grew to 88-72, which would end up being the final score. 

Over the weekend, the Yoemen participated in an in-season tournament hosted by West High School, where they were crowned the tournament champions. Their first opponent was on Thursday against the Grandview Zebras, who they defeated 87-70. Their second game of the day was another victory against the Teague Lions 92-66. The Yoemen played only one game on Friday against the Troy Trojans, who they annihilated 101-47. They then played two games on Saturday, the first game was a matchup with the tournament host West Trojans, and the Yoemen were victorious 93-68. Cameron closed out the tournament with a grueling win against the Alvarado Indians 60-59 to finish the tournament undefeated and be crowned the tournament champions.  

Up next on the schedule, the Yoemen will be participating in another in-season tournament this weekend, the Mike Dacus Classic hosted by Navasota High School. On Thursday, they only have one game to play and it will be against the La Grange Leopards. On Friday, they will play two games; the first game will be the Bellville Brahmas and the second will be the host team Navasota Rattlers. They will end the tournament on Saturday in a matchup with the Madisonville Mustangs.
