Milam County Railroad Museum ready to grow in the new year

The Milam County Railroad Museum and the scale model Old Town Cameron is ready to blow the whistle and pull out of the station. Major renovations are finally complete. With a model as large as Old Town Cameron, fixes and additions will always continue, but the trains are running and it’s story is being told. While volunteers worked on the model over the past two years, the Railroad Museum was still able to host over 2,000 visitors. The museum now houses historic railroad equipment and essays highlighting our Milam communities and our railroad history. We have recently applied for grants that would help us create a video and book that will be named “The Railroads of Milam County.” For the railroad museum to flourish, we need volunteers. Educational programs need to be developed. Displays that are on loan from other Railroad Museums could be displayed. Community and county events can be developed around our museum. The potential for creating learning opportunities and enjoyment from of our Museum District is endless. With the addition of the Milam County Railroad Museum and Old Town Cameron, the Museum District should become a destination that will help the economy of Cameron and Milam County. Exciting opportunities for our children are abound in the history that is found in our Museums. Those opportunities can’t happen unless we have volunteers to help share it and keep it alive. Please give a few hours of your time and help us make the Milam County Railroad Museum and Old Town Cameron the showplace of Milam County. We are open Tuesdays and Saturdays, from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. We would like to be open every day. We can do better with your help. You don’t need special skills or talents. Just come by and offer your help, we’ll get you started. To learn more, go to our Face-book page Old Town Cameron or our website. www.mcrm-otc.org.
