Thorndale native Mary Ann Hill inducted into WTAMU Hall of Champions
West Texas A&M induct its 2018 Athletic Hall of Champions during a ceremony on Friday, Jan. 18. Among the honorees was Thorndale native Mary Ann Hill. Hill was one of the most successful women’s coaches at WT during the AIAW era (1959-1979). She was able to find success without any scholarships or budget where she had 10 student-athletes place in seven events at the Women’s Collegiate National Track & Field Championships. During her time in Canyon, Hill had a combined eight first or second place finishes at the AIAW Texas State Meet. She also guided student-athletes to 51 podium finishes at the district meet to go along with 23 more podium finishes in zone competitions. The WTAMU Athletic Hall of Champions, established in 1987, recognizes outstanding student-athletes, coaches and administrators for their achievements, accomplishments and support of WT athletics. The 2018 class includes Grady Benton (Football, 1994-95), Ben Hangartner (Baseball, 1999-02), Matthew Madison (Basketball, 1999-03), Katie Rickwartz Young (Volleyball, 2006-09), Ralph Anderson (Football, 1968-70), Mary Ann Hill (Women’s Track & Field, 1969-75). The Selection Committee also selects Legacy Award winner each year. The Legacy Award, established in 2008, recognizes individuals and organizations not eligible for the Hall of Champions, but who have made significant lifetime contributions to the success and legacy of West Texas A&M Athletics. This may include fans, WT staff members, boosters or an organization that has provided distinguished support. This year’s recipients of the Legacy Award are W.C. “Chick” and Nancy Russell and the Piehl Family.
